Collins Residence Hall, which had been closed for 14 months to undergo renovations, will be reopened in May of 2022. It can accommodate 466 women.
Nichole Bäcken, project manager of the construction, stated that the remodeling totaled 38.5 million dollars. Renovations have been made to the historic building, while maintaining its original style.
Curtis Odle said, “When we renovate a structure, everything is touched.” When it comes to a communal bath, it stays the same. Collins, for example, has changed radically from a traditional row of toilets and showers to a pod-style community bath. When you walk into the bathroom, you can pick from 5 to 7 pods.
The enclosed pod style bathrooms have a toilet, sink and a separate shower.
Tiffany Lowe of Campus Living and Learning says the privacy issue is the main concern for students. Yet, some sinks were retained with outlets and mirrors mounted on the wall, so that students could use them. It is now almost like having semi private bathrooms. “Having more options and flexibility for students is exciting, because they can have the bathroom that suits them.”
Collins’ classic rooms are still there, but they have been completely remodeled with brand new floors, furniture, lighting, lock, paint and air conditioning.
Odle says that the LED lights will light up an entire building. This will save money, energy and prevent any burnouts.
Collins has been a popular building for many years and is still fondly remembered by former residents. It’s her favorite aspect of the Collins renovation.
Lowe’s excitement at seeing how students respond is understandable, as this was her goal. The excitement of the children and their parents on move-in is what gives Lowe the most satisfaction.
In her remarks about the renovations, she stated that the renovated facility created a unique community.
Lowe believes that the things happening in the hallway are people, relationships and programs. We have made the hall a place that people would want to be, no matter what their experience is. “The facility is a reflection of the local community.”
Baylor spokesperson Lori Fogleman confirmed via email that Memorial, Alexander, Allen, Dawson, Kokernot and Dawson Halls were currently being renovated.
