Ado Ekiti-On Tuesday, the Ureje River, Ado Ekiti’s river, overflowed and flooded its banks along Federal Polytechnic Road. It caused havoc in the nearby buildings.
After frantically trying to get across the heavily-flooded Bridge, they were submerged by the fast-moving water and thrown into a valley.
Eyewitnesses told journalists yesterday in Ado Ekiti that the survivors, who would have drowned if they had not been saved, were saved because some Hausa Divers waited on the bridge for them to cross.
According to the eyewitness “the five victims were trying to cross a high tide bridge and were suddenly washed off by the water.” They raised an alarm at the end of bridge, which attracted Hausa diving teams who immediately jumped in to rescue them.
In areas including Eminrin Estate Adebayo Ita Eku Ilupeju Avenue and Adebayo Estate, buildings worth millions of Nigerian naira have been damaged as the flooding submerged them.
Only 10 of the buildings on Eminrin Estate had been affected. The occupants suffered losses worth millions in naira.
Ajulo told the State Government that the damage caused by the flooding was over N3million.
She added: “In reality, we welcomed Governor Biodun to Eminrin when he came for the dredging of Ureje River. We had no idea we would see this happen again. The third time this has happened to us in 10 Years. This is the third time in 10 years that this has happened to us. The incident is deeply painful to us.”
While Governor Oyebanji assures that his Government will plan out lifesaving measures in order to save residents from being submerged and the property they own.
The governor’s deputy, Monisade, Afuye was accompanied by top officials of government during the visit. They were assessing the destruction in the areas affected by the accident.
She expressed her sympathy for those affected by flooding. The government of my country will never abandon these people. We’ll take immediate action to resolve all of your problems. Our governor Oyebanji will be there to help you.
