A gas fireplace failure or malfunction caused an attic fire that damaged a brand new house in southwest Bend’s Tetherow area late Monday night. This was just one week after its owners had moved in.
Deputy Fire Marshall Dan Derlacki reported that Bend Fire & Rescue had responded to the McRoberts lane fire just after 10 p.m.
They told the authorities that they had been awake for some time and heard noises coming from their attic. Derlacki reported that they went up to the attic and discovered it on fire.
He said that all of the residents were safely evacuated, and the crews stopped the fire spreading to the living area.
Derlacki stated that the owners were just unpacking after moving in one week earlier.
Derlacki stated Tuesday that the investigation revealed the fire started behind the fireplace gas and spread to the attic.
The fire official stated that the fire appeared to be caused either by a failure or malfunction of the installation or assembly. The homeowners insurance company is going to investigate the fireplace further in order to find out the cause of the fire.
Initial loss estimates were $225,000 for the entire structure as well as its contents.
Derlacki stated that the family has been working closely with its insurance agent in order to find housing as part of a longer-term reconstruction process.
