Buenos Aires Province, the City and more than 50 flights were suspended due to torrential rains. La Plata as well as other districts are affected by flooding.
Many people in the Buenos Aires Province were evacuated on Thursday due to heavy rain and thunderstorms. Town halls have also intensified their preventative public works along roads.
Over 50 flights at the Aeroparque Ezeiza and Jorge Newbury International Airports were delayed or cancelled this morning due to thunderstorms in Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area. Over 40 flights were delayed, 8 were cancelled, and some were diverted due to the inability of aircrafts to land.
The SMN Weather Service has issued an amber alert for some provinces due to violent thunderstorms across the nation and in the Metropolitan Area. Hail, rain, and snow were all reported. The amber alert also includes Entre Rios Corrientes and Santa Fe.
Rain and hailstorms were most severe in the north-west region of Buenos Aires Province.
Residents are encouraged to be alert for high tides, southwesterlies and new rain. Authorities noted that there was “heterogeneity” in the impacts across different districts.
Experts say that the majority of flooding is caused by the River Plate rising, making it difficult to drain water.
In the wake of severe thunderstorms which began on Wednesday evening, La Plata was inundated and its neighbours evacuated. Authorities are helping affected families and cleaning up drainage ditches as a result. La Plata mayor Julio Garro has confirmed that the precipitation in recent hours was “historic”, as such heavy rainfall in August had not been seen in 60 years.
Garro said that teams had been in affected areas working since today morning. Over 100 mm rain has fallen in those 12 hours. We are on alert for intermittent showers and brief thunderstorms.
