On October 3, city engineers deemed the 8-unit Gilman Drive building unsafe.

After months of conditions deteriorating, residents of the La Jolla condominium building were forced to leave their home after a sinkhole was discovered. CBS 8 will investigate what happened and how it is being fixed.

Kyle Voors and his wife Sarah, who are tenants at La Jolla Terrace condominiums, said that they have no idea what to do about their stuff. All the clothes and furniture are still there. “The doors will not lock completely, and all sliding doors haven’t even closed close because of the tilt of the building.”

On October 3, city engineers deemed the 8-unit Gilman Drive building unsafe.

Voors warns that it’s too late. Voors has been raising the alarm since months.

Voors said, “They assured us that the building was not moving and they were surveying it. Everything was safe. But at that time it was clearly moving. Sidewalks still fell in.”

On March 31, the sinkhole was reported to San Diego City. Tyler Becker from the City of San Diego said that “winter storms caused a section buried 45 feet below ground level, a corrugated metal pipe with a diameter of 132 inches to collapse.”

The city then sent an emergency contractor out to fix the hole and create a plan for repair. Becker stated that initially, “no impacts were observed on the building.”

The contractor for the city began the excavation and strengthening activities. They worked ten hours per day, seven days per week.

Voors said that the shaking in the home occurs when they are using the boring machine, which is usually within one foot of the balconies.

As the months passed, the situation deteriorated. Then Tropical Storm Hilary struck San Diego and opened another sinkhole near the building and damaged the construction site.

Voors said that the damage was getting worse. The foundation of the building had cracked across the whole thing.

The city engineer determined that the building was unsound and told the residents to leave.

Voors said, “It is absolutely pathetic.” It was perhaps understandable the first couple of weeks, but now that the project is two months old, it is not valid. The building has visible damage.

CBS 8’s Brian White noticed visible cracks in the walls of the building as he walked around.

Becker said that city contractors were still working on determining the cause of the break, the damage caused, the timeline for repairs, and the cost. We will work diligently in order to determine the cause, damage and timeline of repairs related to this water main break.

Voors said, “It is incredibly frustrating and it’s something that should be made public and the city should accept responsibility.”
