An apartment fire on Sunday night left the former resident homeless, and the next-door family living in smoke-damaged units.
Capital City Fire/Rescue arrived at the 2800 Postal Way scene about 7 pm and brought the fire under control in about an hour.
The fire began in the bedroom, but the cause is not known as multiple heat sources were present. This was according to a CCFR press release sent to media outlets by Assistant Chief Dan Jager.
Before the fire was noticed, neighbors reported hearing an audible boom. According to the press release, “firemen were able to use portable extinguishers outside before arriving.”
Bonnie Charles was living in the unit. She said that she had left with her friends at 10:30 am to shop, go to lunch, and to church. Charles was with her friends when the neighbor called to alert Charles’ daughter about the fire. She rushed home to check the damage.
I was in shock. “I was shocked,” replied Charles. I lost it all.
Charles told her that before leaving for the day, she returned twice to the house while waiting. She said, “I didn’t use candles and I did not curl my hair.” Her tablet was the only device plugged into her wall. Inspectors came to her home in the past because she’d had problems with heat. She said, “I don’t really know what started the fire.”
Kaley Nauska was asleep next to her with two children, aged 11 and 16 and her brother. The neighbors frantically tried to wake her. She said that smoke was coming out of the vents. It was frightening. “It seemed as if our apartment would catch fire.”
They rushed outside to join the others who had gathered from the complex. She said, “There was smoke all around.” The neighbors were worried that the firefighters who worked to put out the fire weren’t entering, for fear of Charles or his pets still being inside. The neighbors checked to be sure, she said.
The CCFR released a statement that stated “the occupant WAS NOT HOME at the time the fire occurred.” It also said the blaze had been contained to a single apartment.
Nauska stood in front of her apartment on Monday to inspect the damages. The sidewalk was still wet, the apartment next door had a boarded-up window, and there were fresh smoke damages under the vent.
My house is filled with smoke. “Everyone is worried about my health.”
Nauska also expressed concern for her family. They were very upset by the situation. “It was difficult for them to fall asleep.” She sent the children home today.
Charles, who said she was still in shock and called the loss of their home “traumatizing”, is now trying to decide what she’ll do. She said she’s OK right now. She will be staying at a hotel in the city for two nights.
