The Pines Theater, located in Silsbee’s downtown area, suffered significant damage during Hurricane Harvey and was forced to close. The water from the roof damage destroyed chairs, wall and equipment.
The old landmark is currently being renovated. Roof, walls and the foundation have been fully repaired. According to Silsbee Chamber of Commerce Director Melissa Smart, the interior of the theatre was completely gutted and then abated.
The Pines Theater in downtown began work last week to remove mold, lead and asbestos.
Smart said that AAR Incorporated and Honestly Environmental Services are doing the interior work, including the removal of mold, asbestos, and lead.
After the abatement is complete, the next step will be to get all electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and other systems checked and brought up to standard.
Save the Pines has spent about $400 000 in the last three years to renovate the building. The money was raised by grants, donations, fundraisers and community support.
Smart said the project has three major annual fundraising events — including the Taste of Silsbee, Chili Cook-off and Giving Tuesday — and has partnered with Cruise ‘N Silsbee and the Fifth Street Cruisers to put out a 2024 calendar that can be purchased through the Save The Pines Project at www.betterunite.com/savethepines. The Save the Pines Project also sold t-shirts, cups and rented “names in lights” on the marquee of the theatre.
It is planned to level the floor so that it can be used for either tables or chairs. The project also includes the renovation phase, as well as the finishing touches with audio-visual, furniture, lighting and screen needs.
Smart says that once the theater is reopened it will be available for rent as a venue, including weddings and anniversaries. It can also host birthday parties, concerts, pageants or conferences.
She said that the theatre will have 200 seats.
Smart said, “We’re even considering doing concert series and showing holiday and old movies at weekends. We may even do a comedy show.”
The public was able to view the construction progress in the building during the annual Chili Cookoff held on October 21.
Smart said, “During the Chili Cook-Off we were able do give tours so that people could view the Pines’ past, present, and future.” They were able look at the theatre area to see what needed to be fixed.
Total cost for renovating theater: $2.1 Million
She said, “We hope to finish in 3-4 years depending on the speed at which we raise the money and complete the project.”
Smart stated that the Pines Event Center is a separate entity and not part of Silsbee Chamber of Commerce.
Built in 1948 and damaged in 2017, the theater showed family-friendly films at $1 on weekdays, $3-5 weekends.
