Both fires were declared accidental, and no injuries reported. However, Suffield Chief Fire Officer Bob Rasnick confirmed that five cats perished in the fire in township.

Rasnick stated that the 911 call was made to 360 Griggy Road at around 5:30 p.m. Residents, an older couple, managed to escape the house.

He believes that the home is salvagable but estimates about half of the second and quarter of the 1st floors suffered fire damage. The home has been damaged by heat and smoke.

The cost of the damages was not estimated by him. Investigations are underway to determine the cause.

Rasnick stated that neighbors helped the residents of the house. He said that one woman helped the residents call their insurance company and went to the pharmacy to get the medications they required. She also brought back hamburgers to the firemen.

He said that another woman sat outside with residents.

The fire department was on the scene for a few minutes after nine o’clock. Randolph, Hartville, and Uniontown Fire Departments also responded.

Streetsboro Fire Capt. Kevin Grimm reported that at 5:03 pm, a 911 was received to report a fire on Evergreen Drive (1560).

Grimm stated that there were no injuries, and the pets who lived in the house all escaped safely.

Fire started in the attic of a rear addition, spread to the roofline of the garage and finally into the home.

Grimm stated that the exact cause had not yet been identified. It does seem to be an accident. “It may have been electrical.”

Smoke spread through the entire home, but only a small area of damage had been caused by fire.

Grimm said, “There was smoke detector.” It did alert the residents and it really reinforced that having smoke detectors working in your house can make all the difference.

The estimated damage to the home is more than $25,000. Damage to its contents exceeds $5,000. The house is currently uninhabitable, and all utilities are shut off. Grimm stated that the residents only moved into their home about three months prior.

Grimm said that the Kent and Aurora Fire Departments also responded. He was the last to leave at 8 pm.
