When a child, pet, or elderly person is locked inside a hot car, Lubbock Fire and Rescue and the Lubbock Police Department remind everyone how dangerous it can be.
Ivy, the medical battalion chief at Lubbock Fire and Rescue, said they’ve received 27 calls for people locked in cars since May. While that’s an average number of calls this time of year, Ivy said the number is still too high.
It’s alarming because we’ve had 27 of them since May and it’s getting hot right now, so we’ve got at least two more months of extreme heat,” Ivy said.
Those who find a pet or person locked in a hot car should call 9-1-1 immediately, monitor their symptoms, and act quickly if needed.
“I don’t want to encourage someone to break a window, but if you see it’s necessary, go ahead and do it the safest way you can.” Ivy said.
According to Lubbock Police Department Corporal Tony Leal, contacting first responders should be the first step, but to remain on the phone to ensure police respond appropriately.
Stay on the line with the dispatcher until emergency services arrive so that we can get the information out to responding officers as soon as possible, Leal advised.
She suggests trying every door to see if one is open and working with other bystanders to ensure help is on the way if you cannot locate the owner.
“Open as many doors as possible and see what you can, even if the side doors don’t open, you know, the back doors may open,” Ivy said. “Bang on the window and see what they say. But while you’re doing that, have somebody else call 911, so we can get them out as quickly as possible.”
In addition to carrying tools for opening doors, Ivy said they may contact a local unlocking service if necessary. He said if the individual is not in distress, stay with them until first responders arrive.
