Portugal has been ravaged by fires, forcing nearly 1,500 residents to evacuate. 2,800 firefighters are on the ground. There are orange and red alerts in Spain due to a heatwave with temperatures over 40 degrees that is affecting the Iberian Peninsula.

According to initial estimates, 900 firefighters and ten aircraft were deployed in Odemira near the Algarve tourist area, where several thousands of hectares had already burned. This morning, 16 planes and 2,800 firefighters were deployed across Portugal.

According to AFP the Portuguese Civil Protection Commander Jose Ribeiro told the press “two crucial points” will require “a great deal of effort” in order to be stabilized.

Civil protection reports state that almost 1,500 people were displaced due to the fires in the Southwest since Saturday. Emergency medical services treated 40 patients, including 28 firefighters.

This Monday residents of twenty towns and visitors staying in rural tourist accommodations were evacuated. Many people were accommodated in an old school converted to a hostel.

Another major fire in central Portugal’s Leiria area appears to be under control after destroying more than 7,000 acres.

The temperatures are predicted to fall slightly on Tuesday. However, they may reach as high as 40 degrees at some locations, following yesterday’s record-breaking temperature of 46.4 in Santarem.

Both sides of the border are on alert due to heat, the Southwest of Spain is on orange alert, and Cordoba, in Andalusia, has a level of red alert, indicating “extreme risks”.

Aemet has warned that the temperatures could rise to 44 degrees in Spain on Tuesday, and reach their peak by Wednesday.

This phenomenon will last through Thursday. Twelve provinces in Spain, such as Andalusia and the Madrid Region, Castilla la Mancha as well as those further north, like the Basque Country, are on alert.

Over the weekend, Spain burned more than 1,000 acres of forest. A new fire also broke out in the neighboring region, Extremadura.

The Iberian Peninsula, with its extreme temperatures, fires and droughts as a consequence of global climate change, is at the forefront of the global warming crisis in Europe
