The first of two Fires in Petaluma within two days was kept to a minimal by a well-functioning fire sprinkler.

The Petaluma Fire Department reported that a fire in Petaluma on Tuesday, which started in the engine of a vehicle and spread to the home next door was one of the two in as many days in which a fire sprinkler working properly kept damage at a minimum.

A Petaluma Fire Department Engine was dispatched at 12:39 pm on Tuesday to investigate a reported car fire near Mission Drive & McNear Avenue in the 200 Block of Lena Lane. The 911 system was notified that the flames had spread from the vehicle to the house, prompting the dispatch of additional resources.

The fire department found that smoke and flames were coming out of an engine of a vehicle parked on the driveway. It also spread to the exterior of the garage as well as the front and side of the house.

The fire, which was caused by a sprinkler located in a garage, was extinguished within 5 minutes with minimal exterior damage, according to Petaluma FD’s Battalion chief Mike Medeiros.

Owner of the car said that he had just returned from servicing the vehicle when he smelled smoke and called 911.

Medeiros stated that the Petaluma Fire Department commended the resident and owner of the home and vehicle, as well the neighbors for calling 911 and providing updates.

Medeiros stated that in addition to calls from the homeowner and the quick response of the crews, a working sprinkler system prevented the fire spreading to cause significant damage to her home.

Residents and firefighters reported no injuries.

Petaluma Fire Prevention Bureau investigated the cause and responded.

The Petaluma Building Department, PG&E and other agencies were called and they determined that the damage caused by smoke and heat to the house was not severe enough for the utilities to be turned on.

Medeiros stated that the incident was a good reminder to use smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.

He said: “Furthermore installing and testing a sprinkler system could make the difference between minor and serious damage on a building, as well as ensuring that residents can safely escape during an emergency.”

Petaluma Fire Department expressed gratitude to Cal Fire, Rancho Adobe Fire District Goldridge Fire District as well as PG&E, for their help in the investigation.
