Lisa Espinoza is upset over the loss of her home

San Antonio Fire Department confirmed they responded to a call regarding an odor in an apartment on the Northwest Side hours before it caught fire.

Around 12 am on Tuesday, the original call came into Chisolm Trace Apartments.

Lisa Espinoza, a reporter for KSAT 12 News told the station that she made her call when she noticed a burning smell in her apartment on her third floor.

She told me that firefighters came, looked around her building and then turned off the electrical breakers powering a bathroom fan.

Espinoza still was not convinced this was the full extent of the issue and she tried to convince the fire crews that.

He still said it was dust. “That is not dust that has accumulated,” I replied. “I’m telling it to you, that smells just like wood burning,” she replied.

Espinoza awoke to thicker smoke in her apartment, and her daughter screaming with panic.

“(She was) yelling, ‘Mom! Mom! Mom! Get up! “The house is on Fire!,” she remembered.

Espinoza and her family, as well as all the residents of the building, escaped from the flames, escaping the heat in their homes to the morning cold.

Around 4 am, fire crews returned to the complex located at 10500 Huebner Road for a second time.

The firefighters quickly began to fight the fires that had spread to the attic.

We had a bit of trouble putting out the fire in the attic. The fire was under the eaves, and it flashed,” SAFD Battalion chief Mike Mullins said. The bathroom blower motor that caught on fire appears to be in the attic.

Espinoza had first noticed the smoke in the motor.

She thinks the fire was smoldering all along and the firefighters should have responded more aggressively the first time.

Joe Arrington confirmed, as a SAFD public information officer, that the firefighters cut off electricity during their earlier visit.

He said that there was no note indicating the other actions they had taken at that point.

All the apartments in this section were affected by smoke and water.

Espinoza says the family lost everything in their fire.

My little girls do not even have shoes. “Everything is gone”, she said.

After the fire had been extinguished, volunteers from the American Red Cross arrived to offer temporary assistance to those who were displaced.

Espinoza, however, said that she is worried about her future as there are no other options for her family.
