The flames of Hurricane Dora spread across Maui and forced 11,000 tourists to evacuate.

Maui island, part of the US archipelago Hawaii, has been devastated by a devastating fire. The search continues for survivors amongst the wreckage. This intense fire killed 36 people on Thursday morning. Dustin Kaleiopu, a Maui resident told NBC that “until this morning Thursday we couldn’t get in contact with a number of people and families.”

The intense wind during Hurricane Dora accelerated the fire, making it one of the deadliest and most devastating fires in Maui’s recent history. The National Weather Service said that the cause is not known, but the strong winds and dry vegetation combined with low humidity caused the fire to spread quickly.

The Restoration Foundation had turned several historical buildings into museums, but they too have been destroyed. They also collected much of Hawaii’s history and the legacy left by Lahaina.

Theo Morrison, a Director of the Foundation who was also one of thousands of people evacuated by the fire told The New York Times it had been the most devastating destruction of New York City’s history. The fire, he said, caught everyone completely off guard, and without any warning. In a matter of hours, the forest fire reached the city’s urban network.

At the peak of the blaze on Wednesday, hundreds poured out onto the road, with some being cut off due to falling debris. According to Maui County, at least 14 people were forced, including two children, to jump in the Pacific Ocean as a way to escape the fire. The US Coast Guard rescued them.

Fires across the globe have been devastating this summer, from Greece to Italy to California to Canada and even to the central Pacific Island. This summer, in addition to causing hurricanes and increasing dryness in the forest – Maui had a drought of 2/4 on 16% of its land – it has been devastating for other fires.

Some experts quoted in the US media, and Hawaiians in social networks, have pointed out, however, that the climate crisis is not the sole cause of this fire, just as it has been in other cases. They said that the main cause of this fire was the abandonment and replacement of sugar cane plantations with “non native grass”, which has a higher flammability. This is a similar situation to what occurs in Catalonia where abandoning cultivated land over time has led to the growth of young, unmanaged forest where fire fuel can accumulate. These crops were replaced by tropical grasses, which grew quickly. But when the dry season came, these grasses burned, creating destruction in Maui.

Three different fires broke out on the island of Maui, as well as other eruptions in other islands of the archipelago. In addition to the damage caused by Lahaina, residential areas in Kula and Kihei have also been affected. The fire that raged in north Hawaii threatened 200 homes around Kohala Ranch. This rural community has a population of a little over 500.
